Menopause support in the workplace

Menopause symptoms affect how well many experienced employees can work, and most employees never mention their symptoms at work. Simple, private support gives experienced people somewhere to turn without having to raise their symptoms at work.

Build Your Inner Voice gives each employee their own private wellbeing membership, written around what each employee wants help with. Build Your Inner Voice also helps managers with difficult conversations. See workplace memberships.

Why menopause support at work matters

2 in 3 women aged 40 to 60 who've gone through menopause symptoms say menopause has mostly had a negative effect on them at work, and more than half have been unable to go to work at some point because of their symptoms. Only around a quarter say their employer offers any menopause support or menopause policy (CIPD, 2023).

Many people get through 2 or 3 years of poor sleep, trouble finding words and lower confidence without telling anyone at work about their symptoms, and some people leave their jobs rather than ask for help. When experienced people leave, employers lose skills and knowledge that are hard to replace.

What the government now expects from employers

In March 2026 the government published guidance on menopause action plans. Employers with 250 or more staff are being asked to publish a plan voluntarily from April 2026, and publishing a plan is expected to become a legal requirement from 2027. Each plan needs at least one action to support employees with menopause symptoms.

Smaller employers don't have to publish a plan, but they still have the same legal duties as larger employers in how they treat people with menopause symptoms. The Equality and Human Rights Commission's guidance explains that menopause symptoms can count as a disability under the Equality Act, which means employers may need to make reasonable adjustments. Whatever the size of your organisation, the 2 most useful things you can offer are support that fits each person, and managers who feel confident talking about menopause.

This page gives general information, not legal advice. For your own situation, speak to your HR adviser or an employment solicitor.

Menopause support you can offer your team from today

How Build Your Inner Voice helps employees going through menopause

Employees can use their membership privately, without naming a symptom or telling anyone at work about their menopause. Each employee chooses what they want to work on, and everything they get is written around their choice.

  • If an employee is struggling with sleep, their affirmation tracks and daily practices focus on sleep.
  • If an employee's confidence has dropped, their tracks help them believe in their own ability again.
  • If they struggle to find their words just before a meeting, they can listen to a 5 minute reset straight away, with headphones in and without anyone else knowing what they're listening to.

Each employee can change their focus whenever they like, so their support changes as their needs change.

How Build Your Inner Voice helps managers

Most managers find talking about menopause hard, and worry about saying the wrong thing. Managers get their own set of 5 minute resets, including a 5 minute reset for a difficult conversation they've been putting off. This 5 minute reset helps managers get their thoughts straight in the few minutes before the conversation, so they start the conversation calmer and listen better.

Managers also get a tool for planning a short team session on wellbeing, so the whole team can talk about wellbeing together. Team sessions never single anyone out.

How Build Your Inner Voice fits with your existing support

Build Your Inner Voice works alongside your HR policy, your occupational health provider, your Employee Assistance Programme and any adjustments you already offer, and works without any changes to your existing support. When an employee asks what menopause support you offer, you can offer them a private workplace membership straight away.

  • Your employees' support is private. You never see whether a named person has used their membership or what anyone writes, so employees feel comfortable being honest and are more likely to use their membership. Each month you get a simple report with totals for the whole team, showing how many people are using their membership (once 3 or more people have) and whether they say their membership is helping (once 5 or more people have answered). You can see which email addresses have claimed a membership, so you can hand memberships out and take them back, and that list is for organising memberships, and is not a record of who has used one.
  • We run everything for you. You get one invoice and one team code. People sign up in a minute, with no app to install.
  • You can change the number of places easily. Add places whenever you need them, and free a place up when someone leaves so you can give it to someone else.

What we are, and what we aren't

Build Your Inner Voice is a personal wellbeing tool rather than a medical service, and menopause itself isn't an illness. Build Your Inner Voice works alongside your GP, occupational health and your HR policy, and your GP is the right person for diagnosis, treatment and medical advice. NICE, the body that writes health guidance in England, says talking therapies can help with some menopause symptoms, alongside or instead of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). We help with the everyday side of menopause, such as the things people say to themselves at 3am or just before a meeting, and we aren't a replacement for therapy.

When to speak to a GP

Common questions

How can employers support employees going through menopause?

Give each person support that fits them, make it easy to ask for adjustments such as flexible hours or a cooler workspace, and help managers feel confident talking about menopause. Private, practical support that employees can use in their own way helps employees keep working well.

Do employers have to publish a menopause action plan?

Employers with 250 or more staff are being asked to publish a menopause action plan voluntarily from April 2026, and publishing a plan is expected to become a legal requirement from 2027. Smaller employers don't have to publish a plan, and still have duties under the Equality Act.

What should go in a menopause action plan?

The government guidance asks for at least one action to support employees experiencing menopause symptoms. Many employers include manager training, flexible working, workplace adjustments and access to wellbeing support.

Will I be able to see what my employees write?

No, you can't see what your employees write. Everything each person writes is private to them, so employees feel comfortable being honest and are more likely to use their membership. You can see which email addresses have claimed a membership, so you can hand memberships out and take them back, and that list is for organising memberships, and is not a record of who has used one. Apart from that list, you only see monthly totals for the whole team: usage is shown once 3 or more people have used their membership, and whether people felt better is shown once 5 or more have answered.

Is Build Your Inner Voice a medical service?

No, Build Your Inner Voice isn't a medical service. Build Your Inner Voice is a personal wellbeing tool based on affirmations and short everyday practices. Build Your Inner Voice works alongside medical care and occupational health, and doesn't replace either.
